KIMBERLY ABBS
Illustrator, Designer, Creator
I’ve been a graphic designer since 1998, an illustrator for as long as I can remember, and began working with clay in 2018. I love being a designer just as much as I love being an illustrator and maker—each practice feeds a different part of my creative spirit. Over the years, I’ve taken a variety of art, illustration, and ceramics classes that helped shape the techniques and mediums I use today.

Colorado is home, and the place where I find endless inspiration. I rarely go anywhere without my camera, always ready to capture something quietly wonderful.

When creating illustrations, I work from multiple reference images—primarily my own photography—mixing and matching elements to bring out the personality of the subject. My illustration style is raw and rustic: uneven lines collide to form something expressive, capturing the energy and emotion of each piece.

Scratchboard is one of my favorite mediums. It’s bold, unforgiving, and wonderfully challenging—a go-for-it process I’ve grown to love. I don’t aim to create traditional scratchboard art; instead, I follow what inspires me—whether it’s simplicity, detail, the contrast of light and shadow, or a drawing that feels like it belongs on paper.

My ceramics practice is more than just making—it’s a mindful process. Throwing clay feels like planned spontaneity: tactile, emotional, and grounding. I gravitate toward rustic forms and understated simplicity, and each piece I create is handcrafted, one by one. Nothing is mass-produced, and every item carries its own unique character.

I have a deep love for black and white, but I also enjoy the surprise and joy that color can bring—when it’s right, it’s just right.
