INK

Scratchboard is one of my favorite mediums—a smooth panel coated in white clay and topped with black ink. Using fine blades and sharp tools, I gently scratch away the dark surface to reveal light beneath, carving each image one line at a time. It’s a slow, deliberate process that feels part drawing, part sculpting.

Pen & ink is just what it sounds like—art created using liquid ink, pens, and markers. These tools bring bold contrast and expressive lines to life on paper, canvas, and other inspired surfaces.

Scratchboard Care
The surface of the drawing has been sprayed with a UV-protecting varnish. The sealer provides enough protection that the work does not need to be framed under glass. However, the surface can still be damaged if not handled properly; avoid touching the surface of the board. Scratchboard should be treated in the same manner as any other original artwork, hang it out of direct/bright sunlight or fluorescent light and avoid high heat and humidity. If dust collects on the board, use a soft paintbrush or non-abrasive very soft cloth to lightly clean it.

Care Tip -

The way a scratchboard is sealed—whether with a smooth or textured finish—can make it sensitive to touch. Oils from your fingertips may leave a mark on the surface. If this happens, don’t worry. A light misting of artist-grade varnish (I use Winsor & Newton, available at most art stores) often dissolves the mark without harm.

Important: Avoid rubbing the area, even gently or with a soft cloth, as this can make the stain worse.

Tips for framing scratchboard art

If a floater frame is ideal, make sure to put it in a frame the same size as the board so that the artwork is not able

to shift around in the frame, which can cause damage to the edges. Scratchboards framed under glass must have a mat or spacers to keep the glass from touching the board. Before a scratchboard is framed, care should be taken not to touch the surface of the board. Your local frame experts and handle all the details for your vision. If you'd prefer a piece that does not have a frame to be framed before delivery to your doorstep,

contact me via email, it would be my pleasure to make that happen for you!
