COMPADRES
com-pa-dres: in Spanish, a child’s father and godfather are, to each other “compadres” – “co-fathers” – in English the word refers simply to close friends.
 
Created over the course of two years, this scratchboard illustration brings together buffaloes photographed during my travels in Colorado—carefully arranged into a unified, evocative pose that, over time, transformed them into old friends, quietly echoing the memory of my father, a man who, wherever he went, was always surrounded by loyal companions.
